Assignment 1: "Travel Brochure in Spanish" Reflection:
Completing the "Travel Brochure in Spanish" assignment was an eye-opener in several respects. Primarily, it directly fulfilled Learning Outcome 2: Application of Spanish Vocabulary in Context. I had to dig deep into travel and cultural vocabulary while crafting the brochure, which made the words stick in my mind more effectively than rote memorization ever could.
Moreover, this assignment was instrumental in reaching Learning Outcome 5, which focuses on Cultural Appreciation. While researching for the brochure, I explored the history, cuisine, and tourist attractions of a Spanish-speaking country, which enriched my understanding of its culture and traditions.
But most of all, the creative freedom allowed in this project contributed to Learning Outcome 8: Development of Original Content in Spanish. For the first time, I was creating something original in a language other than my own, which was both exciting and deeply educational.
Assignment 2: "Spanish Conversation Partner" Reflection:
The "Spanish Conversation Partner" assignment had a profound impact on my language skills, notably on Learning Outcome 1: Verbal Communication. Through real-time dialogue, I was able to not only apply vocabulary and grammar but also read social cues and emotional tones in a conversation, which textbooks simply can't teach.
In addition to honing my verbal skills, this assignment fulfilled Learning Outcome 4: Listening Comprehension. Engaging in spontaneous conversations meant I had to understand what my partner was saying in real-time, refining my ability to comprehend spoken Spanish.
After more than a few sessions, it became clear that the assignment was also serving Learning Outcome 7, which aims at fostering Intercultural Communication. The conversation often ventured into cultural topics, holidays, and customs, providing a rounded experience that went beyond mere language learning.
Assignment 3: "Cultural Presentation" Reflection:
The "Cultural Presentation" assignment was an all-encompassing experience that covered multiple learning outcomes. Firstly, it directly engaged with Learning Outcome 3: Written Communication. I had to compile research and script my presentation in Spanish, which was an invaluable exercise in formulating complex ideas in written form.
Moreover, the research aspect of the assignment played a significant role in Learning Outcome 6, focusing on Information Literacy in Spanish. I had to navigate Spanish-language resources to collect information, which sharpened my research skills in a second language.
Lastly, presenting in front of the class was directly related to Learning Outcome 9: Public Speaking in Spanish. Beyond the preparation, the actual delivery involved nuances like correct pronunciation, tempo, and intonation, making me more confident in my public speaking abilities in Spanish.
In summary, each assignment in the FOR 9 course was carefully designed to meet specific learning outcomes. My skills in Spanish communication, both written and verbal, have markedly improved. Above all, the cultural insights gained throughout the course have made learning Spanish a deeply enriching experience
