Assignment 1: "Cellular Exploration" Reflection:
The "Cellular Exploration" assignment was an enlightening experience. It directly aligned with Outcome 1, focusing on understanding the structure and function of cells. Creating cell models allowed me to visualize their complexities, contributing to Outcome 2, which aims for practical application of scientific theories. Moreover, this assignment emphasized the use of scientific tools like microscopes, helping me achieve Outcome 5 related to laboratory skills. In other words, it was an in-depth exposure to cellular biology that set the foundation for understanding more complex biological systems.
Assignment 2: "Ecological Field Study" Reflection:
My experience with the "Ecological Field Study" was utterly transformative. It directly related to Outcome 3, which involves understanding ecosystems and biodiversity. I had to be keenly observant and document local flora and fauna, which honed my scientific observation skills, satisfying Outcome 4. Most crucially, this assignment made me appreciate the importance of ecological balance, reinforcing Outcome 9, which aims to instill a sense of environmental responsibility. The hands-on nature of the field study also enhanced my teamwork and data collection skills, meeting Outcome 8, which emphasizes collaborative learning.
Assignment 3: "Genetics and Heredity Project" Reflection:
Working on the "Genetics and Heredity Project" was both challenging and rewarding. This project enabled me to grasp the principles of genetics, fulfilling Outcome 6. I had to research and trace genetic traits within my family, which made the project personally meaningful and helped achieve Outcome 7, focused on connecting biology to real-world applications. This assignment also involved creating Punnett squares and understanding DNA, helping me master the terminology and symbols used in genetic studies, aligning well with Outcome 10 related to scientific literacy.
All in all, the variety of assignments in the SCI 9 course has made it a comprehensive learning experience. From exploring cellular structures to stepping into the field for ecological studies, and delving deep into genetics, each assignment served as a building block towards achieving the course's learning outcomes.
